Today I will respond to the weak argument Muslims make regarding the claim that the waters of two seas do not mix. Is this truly a miracle, or just a lack of basic physics knowledge?
To understand what actually happens regarding the non-mixing of waters, it’s best we start by learning 4th-grade Physics about density.
ALLAH in the Quran, Surah 18:60-82 says:
"And remember when Moses said to his servant: 'I will not stop until I reach the junction of the two seas or continue for a long period.'”
So, when Muslims saw pictures of what they claimed were the meeting of two seas, they connected this with this verse, claiming it as a miracle of Allah. Fortunately, here at Max Shimba Ministries, we have well-trained scholars in science, mathematics, and biology. So today we’ll respond to Muslims using science.
Let’s begin with the principle of Density:
WHAT IS DENSITY?
DENSITY = MASS / VOLUME
Density is a measure comparing the mass and the volume of a substance. Its physical symbol is ρ (rho).
A body with high density contains more matter in a given volume, while one with low density contains less matter in the same volume. Higher density is what makes us call an object "heavy."
The usual units for density are g/cm³ and kg/m³.
To put it logically:
Fresh water without salt has a density of 1. One liter weighs one kilogram.
WHAT IS MASS?
In physics, mass is a property of matter — and consequently also of an object or a substance.
The standard international unit of mass is the kilogram (kg), usually denoted by m in formulas.
WHAT IS VOLUME?
Volume describes the size or space occupied by a geometrical object (like a cube, sphere, or cylinder) by measuring the space within it.
It’s measured in units of cubic meters (m³) or cubic centimeters (cm³).
Any object with length, width, and height has volume.
SALT WATER:
Salt water is water that contains a certain amount of dissolved salt. Normally, every type of water contains some level of dissolved salt.
On average, ocean water has about 3.5% salt (35 g/L, 599 mM). This means every kilogram (roughly a liter) of seawater contains approximately 35 grams (1.2 oz) of dissolved salts — mostly sodium (Na⁺) and chloride (Cl⁻).
THE DIFFERENCE IN DENSITY BETWEEN THE TWO WATERS
Now, here is where physics comes in:
When water with high salt content (like seawater) meets water with lower salt content (like river water), they do not mix immediately because of the difference in their densities.
The water with higher salt content is denser, meaning it has more mass per given volume than freshwater. This causes the two to initially form a boundary when they meet, a phenomenon scientists call a halocline — a separation layer caused by the difference in salinity (saltiness).
This natural occurrence happens in many places on earth, for example at the point where rivers flow into seas or oceans. Over time, currents, tides, and winds gradually mix the waters together, but at the point of contact, there’s often a visible difference in color and texture due to salinity and temperature differences.
IS THIS A MIRACLE?
The answer is no — it’s basic physical science, specifically fluid dynamics and density difference.
It’s a known, studied, and explained phenomenon in oceanography, and it has nothing to do with divine intervention or miracles. Anyone with a basic knowledge of physics or earth science understands this principle.
CONCLUSION
So the Muslim claim that this is a miracle mentioned by Allah in the Quran is baseless and comes from a lack of knowledge about natural science.
It’s not a miracle, but a normal occurrence explainable by the laws of nature created by God.
We pray that our dear Muslim friends may leave these unscientific claims and come to the true knowledge of the living God through Jesus Christ.
Shalom,
Max Shimba, servant of the Most High God, Jesus Christ.
