Was Muhammad the Parakletos?
Questions That Challenge the Islamic Interpretation of John 14–16

Introduction
For centuries, some Muslim apologists have argued that Jesus' promise of the Parakletos ("Advocate," "Helper," or "Comforter") in John 14–16 was a prophecy about Muhammad. Classical Christianity, however, has consistently understood the Parakletos to be the Holy Spirit. The following questions invite readers to compare the biblical text with the claim that Muhammad fulfills these passages.
1. Did Jesus Say He Would Send Muhammad?
Jesus declared:
"But when the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me." (John 15:26)
Question: If Jesus said He Himself would send the Parakletos from the Father, where does the New Testament ever state that Jesus sent Muhammad nearly six centuries later?
2. Is Muhammad Called the Holy Spirit?
Jesus identified the promised Helper plainly:
"The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name..." (John 14:26)
Question: If Jesus explicitly names the Helper as the Holy Spirit, on what textual basis can the Helper become Muhammad?
3. Was Muhammad Present with the Apostles?
Jesus told His disciples:
"You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you." (John 14:17)
Question: How could the disciples already know Muhammad if he would not be born until centuries later?
4. Did Muhammad Dwell Within Believers?
Jesus promised that the Spirit would live in believers.
Question: Did Muhammad ever dwell within the apostles, or is this language better understood as describing the indwelling Holy Spirit?
5. Was Muhammad Sent Immediately After Jesus?
Jesus instructed His disciples to remain in Jerusalem until they received the promised Spirit (Acts 1–2).
Question: Why did the promise arrive at Pentecost only weeks after Christ's ascension if it referred to Muhammad six hundred years later?
6. Did Muhammad Teach the Apostles All Things?
Jesus said:
"He will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you." (John 14:26)
Question: How could Muhammad remind the apostles of Jesus' own teachings when he never met them?
7. Did Muhammad Testify to the Biblical Jesus?
Jesus said:
"He will testify about Me." (John 15:26)
Question: If the Parakletos testifies faithfully concerning Jesus, why does the Qur'an deny Jesus' crucifixion (Qur'an 4:157), a central event affirmed throughout the New Testament?
8. Is Muhammad Called the "Spirit of Truth"?
Jesus repeatedly refers to the Helper as "the Spirit of truth."
Question: Is Muhammad ever described in the Bible as the Spirit of Truth, or is this title consistently applied to the Holy Spirit?
9. Does the Qur'an Call Allah "Father"?
Jesus spoke of "My Father" and "your Father."
Question: If the Parakletos is sent from the Father, why does the Qur'an reject referring to Allah as Father in the relational sense taught by Jesus?
10. Who Glorifies Jesus?
Jesus said:
"He will glorify Me." (John 16:14)
Question: Did Muhammad glorify Jesus as the divine Son of God, or did he present a different understanding of Jesus' identity?
11. Who Convicts the World of Sin?
Jesus taught that the Helper would convict the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8–11).
Question: Did Muhammad perform this ministry toward the apostles and the world in the way Jesus described, or does this fit the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit?
12. Does the Timing Fit?
Jesus' promise comforted His disciples before His crucifixion.
Question: Would a promise fulfilled six centuries later have comforted the disciples who were about to face persecution, or was Jesus speaking about an imminent gift?
13. Why Did the Early Church Never Identify Muhammad as the Parakletos?
The earliest Christian writers consistently interpreted the Parakletos as the Holy Spirit.
Question: If Muhammad fulfilled Jesus' promise, why is there no evidence that the apostles or the earliest Christians expected a seventh-century Arabian prophet?
14. Did Jesus Ever Mention Muhammad by Name?
Throughout the Gospels Jesus refers to the coming Helper as the Holy Spirit.
Question: Where in the New Testament does Jesus explicitly identify the promised Helper as Muhammad?
Conclusion
The Gospel of John presents the Parakletos as the Holy Spirit, sent by the Father in Jesus' name, proceeding from the Father, dwelling within believers, teaching the apostles, reminding them of Jesus' words, testifying about Christ, glorifying Christ, and coming shortly after Jesus' ascension. From the historic Christian perspective, these descriptions align with the Holy Spirit's ministry beginning at Pentecost rather than with Muhammad's later prophetic ministry.
The central question therefore remains:
If Jesus clearly identifies the Parakletos as the Holy Spirit, what textual evidence from the Gospel of John requires interpreting the Parakletos as Muhammad instead?
